The Expert's Guide to Weight-Loss Surgery: Is it right for me? What happens during surgery? How do I keep the weight off?

From the star of TLC’s Big Medicine, the complete guide to weight loss surgery

Today, an estimated forty-four million Americans suffer from obesity. For most, the traditional of “eat less, exercise more” simply doesn’t work. Thankfully, there is another option— a proven path to reclaiming quality of life, to curing diabetes and other weight-related diseases, and to living without the constant emotional and physical struggles that being obese entails.

This option is weight loss surgery. Having performed more than one thousand weight loss surgeries in his career, Dr. Garth Davis—star of the hit TLC series Big Medicine—knows, firsthand, the surgery’s ability to transform lives. In The Expert’s Guide to Weight Loss Surgery, Dr. Davis combines cutting-edge medical advice and compassionate guidance into what promises to be the definitive handbook on the topic.

The book features a user-friendly breakdown of the various types of weight loss surgeries available today (gastric bypass vs. adjustable gastric banding vs. sleeve gastrectomy); a no-nonsense guide to finding the right doctor; and words of wisdom from dozens of patients who have undergone WLS. Most important, because weight loss surgery alters the digestive tract’s size and structure, Dr. Davis lays out a complete diet and exercise plan to help ensure that readers’ success is long term. This book should be required reading for anyone seeking a permanent obesity cure.

In Memory of John O.

In Memory of John O.

I received the saddest news today. John O. of Moreno Valley died on the 22nd of September from complications suffered during and after his long awaited weight-loss surgery. I knew John through the OH website and message boards, and met him las winter on the OH cruise to Mexico. John was a delightful man, educated, funny, thoughtful...and so much more... He was a teacher, and one could just tell how much he loved those kids...his face would just light up when he spoke of them... John struggled for years to have his surgery. He wanted nothing more than to "be normal" and LIVE his life as fully as he did in his dreams. Like many, if not most, obese people, John suffered also with the stigma of being fat, no doubt his feelings were hurt many times over by careless, or worse yet, cruel people. I know how much he wanted this surgery; he saw the sucesses of so many at OH, and he looked forward to one day sharing his own.

This photo is from the cruise, when everyone in the dining room got up to dance. John didn't sit and watch...he was dancing! And it is an image I will not soon forget.

Your body and soul are free now, John. There is no more pain, no more hurt, and no more restrictions as deemed by this earth. I know you are soaring, and I hope you are watching over us all. You will be missed!
